  1. Fall 2010 Survey Results

  2. Goals of Survey • Solicit feedback from BSS Coaches on a variety of issues: • Originally undertaken to determine if there is a need/demand for “Coaching the Coaches” • Expanded to include the following: • Feedback on New rules implemented Fall 2010 • Identify specific areas for future rule changes • Provide an mechanism for coaches to provide feedback and more engagement with BSS program

  3. Summary of Feedback • Feedback from 46 coaches across all 3 Grade levels – approx. 60% response rate • Coaching Experience: • Majority of Coaches (54%) have less then 2 years experience coaching • 51% want help at either/both practice and games BUT 48% do not want any help • Recommendation: Update website with key drills to assist Coaches; • Rule Changes: Goalies • 60% of Coaches do not want a Goalie in first Grade • approx. 40% do not want Goalies in any grade. But approx. 40% want goalies in all grades! • Recommendation – Fall 2011: Explore removing goalies for 1st grade. Keep in second. • Rule Changes: Goal kicks and throw-ins • 37% want new rule extended to 1st grade BUT 41% do not • Recommendation - Do not extend the throw-in / kick-out rule beyond K grade. • Rule Changes: Mixed Gender teams • 65% want to keep Mixed Gender in all grades • Recommendation – Fall 2011: Keep mixed gender team in all grades. Add more games by gender for 2nd grade (currently 3 for Spring 2011 – previously only 2)

  4. Summary of Feedback • Organizational Direction • Team Size: 43% think team sizes are too big BUT 51% think they are just right. Lots of suggestions for 4v4 for K; 5v5 for 1st and 6v6 for 2nd and also for reducing length of games • Recommendation – Investigate smaller team sizes for games and shortening game lengths – need volunteers from coaching community to help. • Works Well: More coaches = better training; Structured drills = better training • Recommendation – Make a minimum of 3 coaches per team – strongly recommend 4. • Change Now: Need to improve officiating; Goal kicks – need to force opposition teams to retreat; Revisit duration of games; Pop-nets for Practice; More vigilance on pushing • Recommendation – Conduct analysis around adding adult volunteers to refereeing; • Recommendation – Immediate: (1) Make kids retreat to half way during a goal kick; (2) Enforce vigilance through coaches on pushing Future: (3) Explore purchasing/sponsorship for pop-up nets. • Overall Philosophy: Generally coaches support all Kids – BUT there are exceptions; Think about switching to once a week (Practice before games on Saturday); remind coaches about equal playing time for all kids • Recommendation – Conduct analysis on same-day soccer (combine with team size / game length analysis) – Need volunteers from coaching community • Recommendation – Immediate: Reinforce during coaches meeting that all kids should be cheered, equal playing time.
