Proclivity • Pro-cli-vi-ty • (Noun) – a person, place, thing, or idea • Meaning: A natural attitude or behavior; tendency • Example: • Braxton feels that her proclivity to bend the rules and work the system could get her into trouble. • She is probably late because of her proclivity to ignore her morning alarm.

  3. Proclivity • What do you think most students in the gifted program have the proclivity to do? • What do you have the proclivity to do?

  4. Anomalous • A-no-ma-lous • (Adjective) – a word describing a noun • Meaning: inconsistent with what is normal or expected; irregular; unusual • Example: • Even though she often is late, occasionally absent, and sometimes turns in her homework late, her teachers know her circumstances are anomalous.

  5. Anamolous • Describe some of the anomalous circumstances of students described in the book And Still We Rise.

  6. Tumultuous • Tu-mul-tu-ous • (Adjective) – a word that describes a noun • Meaning: disruptive and disorderly; chaotic • Example: • She trusts him because he, too, grew up poor and had a tumultuous childhood.

  7. Tumultuous • Describe possible tumultuous circumstances that would cause a romantic relationship to end.

  8. Sangfroid • San-fwa • (Noun) – a person, place, thing, or idea • Meaning: Coolness and composure, especially during difficult situations. • Example: • The roommate stopped suddenly, startled by Olivia’s sangfroid.

  9. Sangfroid • Describe a time when either you or someone you know practiced maintaining their sangfroid.

  10. Plaintive • Plain-tive • (Adjective) – a word describing a noun • Meaning: mournful; expressing sorrow • Example: • “’I can’t handle another two months in one of those homes’, she said plaintively.”

  11. Plaintive • Name one song that has a plaintive tone. Write the lyrics that justify the plaintiveness.
