Background Knowledge • Born on September 14, 1849 • Russian Physiologist, Psychologist, and Physician • 1901 he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences • In 1904 he was awarded a Nobel Prize • In 1907 he was elected Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences • In 1912 he was given an honorary doctorate at Cambridge University • Died February 27, 1936

  4. Classical Conditioning (C-C) • Conditioned reflex could explain the behaviour of psychotic people • Those who withdrew from the world may associate all stimulus with possible injury or threat • John Watson

  5. Transmarginal Inhibition(TMI) • What is it? • Organism’s response to overwhelming stimuli • The body shuts down • Rather then endure pain

  6. Transmarginal Inhibition(TMI) • 3 Stages: • Equivalent Phase • Paradoxical Phase • Ultra-paradoxical Phase

  7. Transmarginal Inhibition(TMI) • Tolerance of stimulation varies greatly between individuals • A highly sensitive person may be over stimulated by loud volumes in a movie theatre • While others may find the same stimulations as ideal stimulation levels or under stimulating

Notable Skills • As a junior detective Veronica possesses certain sleuth skills: • Expert liar and lie detector • Photography • Computer savvy (mainly tracking through the Internet) • Tailing cars • Operating bugging/surveillance equipment • Creating false documents • Imitating the voices of others • Counterfeiting

  12. Veronica & Pavlov’s C-C • C-C to respond to aversive stimuli • Conditioned Response: Revenge • Veronica’s addiction to solving a crime • Conditioned Response: Happiness • Response to friendships • Conditioned Response: Hesitation

  13. Veronica’s Biggest Fear • COMMITMENT • Getting close to anyone in order to TRUST them • Pavlov would suggest: • Systematic desentization • Slowly immerse herself • Or even ‘Flooding’ • Expose her to her fear

Transmarginal Inhibition • Equivalent Phase • Veronica’s responses to various occurrences matches the stimuli • Paradoxical Phase • Small stimuli receive major response • Major stimuli elicit small responses • Her mom leaving • Ultra-paradoxical Phase • Negative Stimulation results in positive responses (visa-versa) • Relationship with Logan

  15. Veronica’s Temperament: • Lively • Very responsive to stress but not as extreme as the strong excitatory temperament • Personality temperament is very easy to enthuse by stressing

Veronica & Various Therapies • Pavlov believed that the best way to stop a certain behaviour was for the subject to associate it with a unpleasant sensation • Veronica has no negative behaviours that would need to use of aversive therapy • She uses a type of aversive therapy on her enemies of her tazer • Associate their bad behaviour with unpleasant stimulus

  17. Conclusion • Classically Conditioned • Her biggest fear: • To TRUST anyone • Fix this through: • Flooding • Systematic desentization • Veronica fluctuates between the 3 stages of TMI • Lively temperament
