  2. The Purpose of Coaching To help us become and accomplish all that God wants us to be and do.

  3. What is Coaching? • Coaching is a relationship with a purpose. • Coaching is a relationship focused on change. • Coaching is powerful.

  4. How a Coach Functions • A coach focuses on the planter’s goals, learning and capacity. • A coach draws out the planter’s motivations, ideas and decisions. • A coach uses dialogue skills to help the planter make new discoveries, and gain perspective and new insights. • A coach helps the planter create an ‘actionable’ plan that will move them ahead.

  5. How a Coach Functions • A coach relates • A coach actively listens • A coach asks compelling, potent questions • A coach helps you think for yourself • A coach holds you responsible • A coach encourages and affirms you

  6. Success: “Find out what God wants you to do, and do it!”

  7. C.O.A.C.H. Model Following a simple coaching model will help you to coach better. The COACH Model has five steps to guide you through a coaching session.

  8. Connect: Engage Example Questions: • How have you been? • What’s God been doing in your life lately? • What insights have you had since our last session? • In what ways did you sense the Holy Spirit at work in your life since the last session?

  9. Connect: Engage A coach may also use this time to review last session’s action steps. Example Questions: • What progress did you make on your action steps? • How did it go on your action steps?

  10. Outcome: Determine Session Goal Example Questions: • What result would you like to take away from our meeting today? • What would be most helpful to you for us to work on? • What would make today’s session successful for you?

  11. Awareness: Reflective Dialogue Example Questions: • Describe the situation. • What is your desired outcome in this situation? • What other factors are influencing this situation? • Let’s look at this from a different perspective...

  12. Course: Action Steps Example Questions: • What options do you have? • Which of these options would you like to try? How? When? • What action steps would you like to take to move ahead? • On a scale of 1-10, with 10 high, how confident are you that you can do this plan? (If 7 or lower go back and work on the plan.)

  13. Highlights: Learning & Action Steps Example Questions: • What parts of the discussion were particularly helpful? • What awareness do you have now, that you didn’t before? • What are your action steps?

  14. Remember! A good coach never ends the coaching session without thanking and affirming the church planter for all their good work!

  15. Think about it...Right or wrong? The new church plant has invited the conference coordinator to visit and discuss their plans for evangelism. After listening, asking questions, and clarifying issues, the coordinator points out which of their ideas would work best.

  16. Think about it...Right or wrong? Pastor George remembered that his plant would be calling that week to discuss their project. He quickly typed out an agenda of the items he wanted to discuss and emailed it to the plant leader.

  17. Think about it...Right or wrong? Tom had determined that he must research different methods to promote Spiritual gifts in his plant. When he called to keep his appointment with Sally, she asked how his research had gone. After telling her that he had failed and had not done it, he was surprised that she did not chew him out. She helped him explore the reasons he had not accomplished the task and helped him set up new goals for the next month.

  18. Think about it...Right or wrong? Joshua had grown very close to Albert and looked forward to their next session. He felt glad to have someone who really listened to his concerns and helped him think things through, even though some of the questions were very difficult.

  19. Think about it...Right or wrong? Jerald listened closely to the questions, made sure Claire understood the problems, and then told her what chapter to read and what steps to take before the next meeting.

  20. Think about it...Right or wrong? Jason rose when Tim entered the room, greeted him warmly and talked about Tim’s family before asking him what he hoped to accomplish in their session. He listened and asked good and helpful questions.
