  1. The Evolution of Pens By Rudy Chow

  2. The beginning of pens It first started in 3000 BC Ancient Indians first used pens Manufactured by rods of bamboo and reeds The Indians wrote ancient text The Egyptians used pens write on Papyrus scrolls.

  3. The Early use of Pens The word "pen" is derived from the Latin word "penna" meaning of feathers. Early civilizations used feathers for a writing utensil. The best feathers to use for the pens are large birds, like a swan or goose Early civilizations used different materials to make ink ex.) Natural plant dye, animal, and graphite

  4. Quill A writing instrument from the 6th to the 19th century Were usually made from goose and swan feathers, and later, turkey feathers Other than written text, they were often used to create figures, decorations, and images on manuscripts. The tip of the pen was also very flexible, which made easy a variety of different strokes. Quills went into decline after the invention of the metal pen

  5. Dib/Nib pen They are usually made of wood You would have to continually refill the ink to use it They are mostly used for writing and drawing Illustrators and cartoonists still use them today They make great differences between thick and thin lines, and generally write more smoothly than other types of pens

  6. Nib A nib is the part of a quill, dip pen or fountain pen they come into contact with the writing surface in order to deposit ink. Different types of nibs vary in their purpose, shape and size, as well as the material they are made from. Ex.) Copper, Metal, Steel

  7. Fountain Pen The first fountain pens appeared in the 1850’s Contains an internal reservoir of water-based liquid ink The ink is drawn through a feed to the nib and then to the paper The typical fountain pen requires little or no pressure to write.

  8. Rollerball Pen Uses ballpoint writing mechanisms with water-based liquid or gelled ink Uses less viscous inks, which tend to saturate more deeply and more widely into paper Initially, designed to combine the ballpoint and fountain pen. The ink has a greater variety then regular ink pens which gives it brighter colors

  9. Ballpoint pen The first ballpoint pen was issued in October 1888 Has internal ink reservoir and a sphere for a point Filled with a viscous ink that is dispensed at its tip during use by the rolling action of a small sphere

  10. The Evolution of Pens From the early stages of the pen like the Quill pen to the more modern pens of today like the Ball point pen they will always be used for writing, drawing, etc. The pen was a great invention and is used by everybody back from the beginning when it was just a feather to ballpoint pens.
