  2. Nationalism • : loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all

Prussia or Austria (Cause) • Prussia-(effect) • -majority German, Supported by the Junkers (effect) • did not want Austria to join Zollverein-“Economic Union of German State” • Ottovan Bismarck-Chief Minister to William I, main goal was to create a stronger army. (Cause) • -friendliness to Russians • Schleswig and Holstein-2 states that could not be separated. Denmark tried to take over Schleswig----Austria and Denmark do not let this happen and engage in the Denmark War. (cause) • Austria occupies Holstein (South), Prussia Occupies Scleswig (North).---argument,..>Prussia needs to travel through Holstein in order to get to Schleswig. • -Prussia gets help from Italy and defeats Austria—Needle Gun and Railroads---makes peace instantly.

Unification of Germany (Part 2) • -Bismarck creates the North German Confederation---unites 22 states (Cause) • (Effect)Government- constitution and bicameral parliament, Bismarck Chancellor and answers to President. ---Reichstag was parliament elected by males---United government • -France was in decline---worried that WillaimI’s cousin Leopold Hohenzolleren would be crowned next King of Spain (helped in Revolution)---feared problem of German influence on both sides.(Cause) • Vincent Bendetti asks William I to prevent the crowning of Leopold-he agrees, but Bismarck plays it to the media that Germany was insulted—leads to Franco Prussian War.(effect) • Prussia Wins Alsce and Lorraine and 5 billion Gold Francs!(effect)
