  5. Many feared that the hard times-caused by the depression-would harm their family values • Men had a difficult time, because society dictated that they should provide for their families • This is where the term “hobo” comes from Family in the Depression

  6. How did families cope? • The federal government did not have a system of “Direct Relief” or welfare. • New York did have a welfare system, each family could receive $2.39 a week Families Cont.

  9. Children Suffered • In the 1930’s, cities had to cut hospital and school funding. Children had several health problems like Rickets. • By 1933, 2600 schools closed down, leaving 300000 children with no education. • Kids began to hope trains t try to find work, and adventure.
