  3. Issues Arise • Banks continued to experience failures • Thousands of companies going out of business • Approximately ¼ of the workforce now unemployed

  4. Limited Relief • Unemployed & their families often went hungry • Stood in breadlines or lined up outside soup kitchens • NYC’s YMCA fed 12,000 daily

  5. Homelessness • Struggling to pay rent/mortgages • Some would or could not move from their homes • Landlords needed eviction notices from the courts • Bailiffs would come • Eject nonpaying tenants • Pile belongings in street • Homeless people set up shacks on public lands • Called shantytowns, nicknamed Hoovervilles

  6. Hobos • Mostly boys and young men • Searching for work or better life • Wandered the country • Walking • Hitchhiking • “Riding the Rails”

  8. The Dust Bowl • Over-farming • Drought • Windstorms • Crop production decreased • Banks foreclosed on farms • Farmers moved to California • Okies CAUSES CONSEQUENCES

  10. Comic Books • Popularity began to rise • Originally reprints of news paper comics • Superhero genres led to original stories being printed • Superman (1938) and Batman (1939)

  11. Movies • Going to movies ~ once per week • Popular genres included: • Comedies • Horror • Musicals • Walt Disney produced first feature length animated film • Snow White (1937)

Literature • Attempting to portray life around them • The Grapes of Wrath • Joad family flees Dust Bowl after losing farm • Make new life in California • Based on Steinbeck’s visits to migrant camps • Utilized stream of consciousness technique • The Sound and the Fury • Shows character’s thoughts and feelings • Characters don’t always speak • First section of the book not written in a fluid timeline John Steinbeck William Faulkner

  13. Art • Photojournalism on the rise • New 35mm cameras allowed for easy transport • Showed affect of GD on average American • Painters part of regionalist school • Emphasized traditional American values • Grant Wood’s American Gothic
