  1. Goals of Presentation: To be able to explain the meaning and provide examples of “High Expectations for All” To be able to apply this tenet to your own classrooms

  2. High Expectations for All The Foundation for Achievement Matt Hysell Education 540

  3. What do you mean by “High Expectations for all”?

  4. Well… It means you have high expectations for everyone… …Duh… But it’s not that simple…

  5. What does this mean? • It means more than increasing performance on a test or raising a particular standard. • It means truly believing that everyone we come in contact with throughout the school community wants to do her or his best and, given a supportive atmosphere and individualized attention, every person will do her or his best. • It means knowing that all of our students are capable of more than adults often assume. • It means that, when given challenges, opportunity, and support and when allowed to engage in genuine activities that affect the school and community, adults and children will meet and exceed any expectations of them.

  6. Not only is this tenet required for the understanding and implementation of all other “This We Believe” tenets… But this is something you can and should be practicing and believing before you ever set foot in a classroom.

  7. But why is it important to have high expectations for all members of the learning community?

  8. It is well documented that expectations relative to students become self-fulfilling. • “My teacher thought I was smarter than I was…so I was.” • When students are encouraged to participate in active, genuine learning activities with the expectation that they will succeed, test scores skyrocket…even when this is not the focus of the attention… Why?

  9. Bottom line… your students will become what you expect of them. Check the research: If a teacher thinks a student can succeed, then the student will succeed. This is why it is important to have high expectations!

  10. But what about you? Does this tenet justapply to the students?

  11. If we go back and reread the tenet, it says that middle schools and middle school educators should have high expectations…for every member of the learning community

  12. It applies to all of us as teachers… • This not just directed to our students. We must have high expectations of our administration, our support staff, our parents, our community, our teacher educators, and ourselves. • We as teachers must continue to learn and keep up to date on current practice and research so that we can bring this to our class. • We must learn from our colleagues and accept the support of those around us, so that we can be the best we can be.

  13. It applies to our administration and support staff, our community, our government, and our student’s parents… • We must look to our principals to set the tone, coach as needed, and hold us to the same high expectations. • We must understand that no parent ever held a newborn baby and hoped for that child’s failure. We must never forget that all parents want their children to succeed, no matter where the parent is in his or her own life, and we must maintain home and school partnerships to foster success.

  14. In order to hold high expectations for our students, we must hold the same high expectations for ourselves and everyone else in the educational community.

  15. Ok, I get why it’s important to have high expectations, But what do high expectations for all look like in the classroom?

  16. We are all unique, and we all can achieve in our own ways, doing our own thing… • It starts with the understanding that every person is unique with unique needs and, in the age group we are teaching, every student is at a different level of development. • In recognizing this, we must bring the teaching to the students, not make the students come to the teaching. • We must provided the variety of education to our students that will allow them to achieve the high expectations we have of them, with varying degrees of structure, pace, and teaching and learning strategies. • We must also know that true learning occurs when students explore to make sense of themselves and the world. This points to curriculum that studies true issues and values. It also requires that students have a voice in the classroom and in their learning.

  17. But, ultimately, the question of what high expectations look like is a question YOU must answer and reflect in your own classroom and school… So…

  18. From your experience or the readings, what are some examples that show a teacher has high expectations for the learning community?
