  4. The Symbolism of the Tree • The description of the tree and stories surrounding it add to the suspense of the hanging scene. The tree itself could be said to symbolise death – its grim associations foreshadow what is to come.

  5. Draw an outline of a tree – it should take up most of the page!Find as many quotes as you can about the tree from the story.

  6. Look again at lines • Explore how the writer creates suspense in this section of the story. In the order that they happen, write a list of the 6 most tense parts of that section. 1. 4. 2. 5. 3. 6.
