  1. The ES-DSWG Standards Process Group R. Ullman ES-DSWG Workshop Wilmington, DE October 20, 2009

  3. Standards Diffusion Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 • Chasm between: • early adopter - technology for strategic advantage • early majority - pragmatic focus. • A practical path across chasm … “Community-led” • successful practice in specific community • broader community adoption • community-recognized “standards” • Community-led relies on: • trusted endorsements • strong leadership • “whole product”

  4. ESDS Standards Process – Seeking Pragmatic Recommendations Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 • A specification or practice is recommended as a standard … Only after practices have been shown to: • (1) have demonstrated implementation and • (2) benefit to operation will they be endorsed for preferential use. • Ideas come from innovators or mission planners and are tempered by the significant demands of writing an RFC. • Review process permits adoption only after “significant” community endorsement. • THE RFC PROCESS PROVIDES PRAGMATIC REFERENCES

  5. SPG Goals for This Meeting Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009

  6. Goals for this meeting Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 • Build on recommendations from meeting at National Academies • Standard Breakout: June 25, 2009. • Build on vision for future NASA Earth science data systems • Build on existing mission science data systems • Learn from decadal survey mission planners • Develop concrete plans for decadal survey standards

  7. Build on recommendations from meeting at National Academies Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 • Recognized a need for a NASA Earth science data systems reference architecture. • Define common science data system elements and relationships among them. • Specify existing, proven standards at the interfaces. • Recognize “standards gaps” (i.e. interfaces that have no NASA standard) • NASA must assure support for recommended standards. • SPG Standards for Data Format and Metadata • HDF5, HDF-EOS5, netCDF for data format • GCMD DIF for metadata • Reviewing ECHO, CF; tracking ISO 19115 • Continued activity is needed to keep the standards current and interoperable: static=past. • THIS MEETING :: REFERENCE ARCHITECTURE

  8. Build on vision for future NASA data systems Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 Breakout #1 Tuesday 2:00 – 3:30 SPG Data Systems Interoperability – Joint with the Technology Infusion Working Group Key issues in data, services, and semantic interoperability for the next generation of data systems. Ruth Duerr Brian Wilson Peter Fox/Rob Raskin.

  9. Learn from Existing NASA Science Data Systems Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 Breakout #2 Wednesday 11:00 – 12:30 SPG     Reference Architectures:  Present Systems Experiences in Community Building - David Cuddy (JPL)  ECS/EOSDIS Architecture - Dan Marinelli (GSFC)  AMSR-E SIPS:  Distributed Processing system - Helen Conover (UAH) Breakout #5 Wednesday PDS - Planetary Data System

  10. Learn from decadal survey mission planners Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 Breakout #3 Wednesday 01:30 – 03:30 SPG     Reference Architectures:  Decadal Survey Perspectives Representatives of the Decadal Survey teams will discuss the present state of plans for their science data systems, with particular emphasis on broad systems architecture and standards. DESDynl  and SMAP Science Data System Architecture - Chris Mattmann (JPL) CLARIO Science Data System Architecture    - Chris Curry (LARC) ICESat II Science Data System Architecture   - David Hancock (GSFC)

  11. Develop concrete plans for decadal survey standards Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009 Breakout #4 Wednesday 04:00 – 05:30 SPG     Reference Architectures for Decadal Survey Discussion – core standards A discussion session.  Given community experience, past practice and the decal survey plans, what standards are needed by the decadal survey mission data systems?  Representatives from the decadal survey mission data systems will be asked to discuss this.  What standards are recommended for the Decadal Survey science data systems?  The output of this session will be an action plan or specific recommendations. Standards Recommended by the Standards Process Group – Richard Ullman (GSFC) Planetary Data System Architecture and Core standards – Emily Law (JPL) Discussion Summary of Responses from Decadal Survey Regarding Needed Standards – All

  12. SPG – Standard Live Music Event: Kelly’s Logan House, Trolley Square • Carla and Marty Tuesday • Kelly's Logan House is a Delaware Landmark featuring great food, music, and atmosphere. • Meet in lobby • Dinner • Music at 9:00 Standards Process Group - Overview - 10/20/2009
