August 31, 2012-Activity • Title: Summer Reading Vocabulary pg. 11 • Characterization-includes what a character says (dialogue), what a character does (actions), what a character thinks (interior monologue), what others say about a character, and through the author’s direct statement. • Motivation-a reason that explains a character’s thoughts, feelings, actions, or behavior. • Round character-a complex, fully-rounded personality; a three-dimensional character. • Flat character-a character presented with only a single important trait. • Stock character-a flat character in a standard role with standard traits. • Dynamic character-a character that changes in response to the actions through which he or she passes. • Static character-a character that changes little over the course of a narrative/story. Things happen to these characters, but little happens in them. • Foil-a character, usually minor, designed to highlight qualities of a major character.
