  1. Smart Cards in ANSI-41 Phones What Happens to the ESN? Scott F. Migaldi Manager, Standards Development Network Architecture and Technology (847) 632-4574 Voice, (847) 632-6999 FAX w10265@email.mot.com

  2. In Current Systems... Integrated-UIM phones and supporting Network Elements (e.g., HLRs) consider MIN, ESN (or IMSI, ESN) to be a matched pair, where: MIN/IMSI is the subscription ID ESN identifies the mobile station This matching applies to authentication, access control, and billing.

  3. MIN ESN MIN ESN Current Systems... , Auth Response, Service Request Wireless Network MIN/ESN Check Authenticate HLR AC

  4. The MIN (or IMSI) will identify the subscription; The ESN of the handset will be unrelated. Therefore an HLR MIN/ESN Check will fail Two Solutions may be considered: (1) Redefine ESN as an ID of the Smart Card or (2) Redefine HLR and Billing Functions If a Removable UIM (Smart Card)is used,

  5. If ESN of Smart Card is used... , Auth Response, MIN ESN Service Request Wireless Network MIN/ESN Check MIN Authenticate ESN HLR AC Smart Card

  6. If ESN of Smart Card is used... MS ESN no longer accompanies Access Messages Legacy Networks affected? MS ESN could be obtained via “status” command and response ESN pool depletion could be aggravated

  7. ESN ESN If ESN of Handset is used... , Auth Response, MIN Service Request Wireless Network MIN/ESN Check MIN Authenticate ESN HLR AC Smart Card

  8. If ESN of Handset is usedwhile MIN is on smart card... MS ESN accompanies Access Messages Legacy Networks should not be affected HLR and Billing would accept MIN (IMSI) as ID of subscription, ESN would “float”
