  2. CAPTN grew out of a meeting during the 2006 Int’l. AIDS Conference in Toronto. The central idea was to link existing bilateral (Canadian-African) teams together into a network, with the purpose of facilitating inter-team collaboration. History Canada-Africa Prevention Trials (CAPT) Network

Was Inaugurated in March 2007 CAPTN is an affiliation of: More than 30 African and Canadian researchers 8 African and 5 Canadian institutions The Network is led by a Steering Committee, composed of representatives of each of the affiliated institutions and at least one other stakeholders The CAPT Network Canada-Africa Prevention Trials (CAPT) Network

Mission • To strengthen independent basic and clinical research capacity in eastern and southern Africa. • To facilitate and conduct first class prevention science with high needs populations. • To link care, treatment and prevention research. Main objectives • Develop an African-led research plan that responds to locally identified priorities and operationalizes the CAPT Network Discordant Couples (DISCO) Cohort. • Build a sustainable research network that can mobilize in response to the need for coordinated multicentre trials of HIV vaccines, microbicides, and diagnostics. • Enhance research capacity through the provision of infrastructure resources, staff, training and harmonization of internationally accepted procedures. • Collaborate with other networks

The Network’s annual activities include: Assisting the 8 African sites with infrastructure staffing; Providing career training awards (3 mentorships, 5 Master’s/doctoral scholarships and 1 postdoctoral fellowship) Assisting Network researchers with study development & implementation, grant writing, abstract preparation and manuscript writing; Coordinating Regional and Network-wide communications, including inter-site meetings and training workshops. A few highlights from the South African sites’ 2013 activities… Maintaining CAPT Network website and the Immunopaedia website; Providing support for training activities, such as the annual Southern Africa immunology workshop and the PHRU publications writing program; Expanding football-based ‘WhizzKids’ behaviour change program beyond Pietermaritzburg into other South Africa sites; Implementing a multi-site adolescent male circumcision initiative aimed at associating behaviour change with immunological composition of the circumcised foreskins. A few highlights from the East African sites’ 2013 activities… Supporting ongoing research with existing cohorts (most notably discordant couples cohorts, but other cohorts as well, including fisher folk and adolescents;) Publishing the results of recent Network studies, such as the Yellow Fever Microarray Study and the HAARP Study; Beginning new studies, such as a treatment-as-prevention study among discordant couples in Nairobi and a safe male circumcision program in 8 Ugandan fishing villages; Hosting this Afri-Can Forum, which has brought many different networks and teams here today.
