  1. Maths in space…by mathematical munchers PROJECT JUGAAD !!! Consists of: Haleen Kurana Dagmara Jamielak Atieve Wadhwa Saksham Juneja.

  2. STANDARD FORM… • What is standard form? • It is the way of writing very large numbers or small numbers easily. • E.g. 1000 = 10³ • 4000 = 4 x 10³ • How is standard form used in space????? • Scientists/mathematicians need to calculate how far planets are from the sun • Mercury is 58000000km away from the sun • Obviously that is just way to long so we need to present it in its simplest form • 58000000 = 5.8 x

  3. Time for a question… • Light travels at 300,000km/sec. How much time will it take to send a radio wave from Pluto to the sun (assume radio waves travel at the speed of light) • The distance between Pluto and the sun is 5,900,000,000km. Calculators are allowed.

  4. ANSWER… • What is speed? • Speed is a compound measure • The question is asking us to find how much TIME it takes • Time = distance/ speed. • So… • 5900000000/300000 = 19,666.7sec • Change your answer into hours • 19,666.7/60 = 327.8mins • 327.8/60 = 5.46hrs

  5. Maths everywhere……. • Maths is present everywhere in space no matter what aspect you are looking at… • Inside a space shuttle, on the computer screen what do you see?? • You will see various calculations and updates • Numbers, numbers and just numbers…

  6. That was our presentation … What have you guys learned today??? THANK YOU
