  23. The Evolution of the Giraffe Millions of years ago, the ancestors of giraffes had short necks, and ate mostly grass. But due to random mutations, there was variation. Some had slightly longer necks. The ones with slightly longer necks were able to compete by eating the leaves from trees. In this environment, longer necks were an advantage, so they were able to survive and reproduce more. Over millions of years, the giraffes with shorter necks died out, while the longest necks reproduced and passed down their traits to their offspring. That is how the giraffe evolved and why today, we have giraffes with very long necks.
