Client-Based 7 • Advantages: • Feature rich (video, audio, plugins) • Best support • Disadvantages: • Proprietary • Limited to one group
Built-In 8 • Facebook, Myspace, gMail all have chat embedded in their services • They want to keep you on their site!
Mobile 9 • All major IM clients have mobile editions • Use SMS (text messaging) • Not as feature rich and harder to type
Aggregators 10 • Become chat agnostic! • Clients that allow you to simultaneously chat with people of different IM platforms • Digsby (PC) • Pidgin (PC) • Adium (Mac) • Some also work with email, Twitter and Facebook updates • Sometimes break, but much better than in the past
Web Based 11 • Works with all IM services • Can create an account and be on multiple services at once • Can IM from anyway there’s a browser • Get around those pesky blockers! • Can imbed chat in a web page, Facebook, etc.
IM Etiquette 12 • Find out if there is an IM policy in your department • When to use? • Quick conversations • Sending links • When not to use? • Detailed conversations • Some people just don’t like IM, period
DO….. 13 • DO keep your buddy lists and/or accounts separate • DO remember that IM chats can be kept via transcript on either end • DO Use your status options • DO type in full sentences • DO know when to end a conversation • DO use good judgment about personal use
DON’T 14 • DON’T accept IMs from people you don’t know, and NEVER click on links in IMs from people you don’t know • DON’T use cutesy screen names • DON’T use “IM slang”…LOL! • DON’T use annoying “new message” sounds
