Updates • Ruby Pap Coastal Resources Extension Kauai Lecture (Hanapepe Public Library) • Ruby Pap on Kauai Kai and Wai on KKCR (Adam Asquith and Don Heacock's call- in show) • PacIOOS (collaboration with COSEE - IE flat panel displays: 10 statewide) • GA training (based on CRDG TSI & GK-12 training, and COSEE COS: training this spring April 26th-27th)

  3. Hanauma Bay Crew • North shore guided snorkel with Alan Hong (retired HB manager) • "Pupu's & Pumpkins" carving party in October • Thanksgiving potluck for volunteers and staff • 4 Saturdays in October-November volunteer training program for the year (trained 10 new Interpretive Guides for the HBEP) • Windward Mall's Festival of Giving fundraiser for non-profits, $310 -- 100% of the proceeds go to HBEP for volunteer enrichment • Annual Friends of Hanauma Bay Holiday Gathering next week • Honolulu City Lights (HCL), Honolulu Hale, Friday December 14th -- "Ocean" theme this year and HBEP will be providing educational activities and crafts tables to teach about marine life, Hanauma Bay, etc

Hanauma Bay Crew Cont. • July-September, 77 orientations for groups, serving nearly 2,000 people, half Hawaii resident groups • July & August Thursday evening lecture series focused on Sea Grant Supported Graduate Research. • 13 graduate students from UH Mānoa and UH Hilo presented to approximately 140 program patrons • Multiple students presented each evening • Researchers gained public speaking experience • Public learned about “Hawai‘i’s 1960 tsunami and the long-term consequences of a coastal disaster”, “Restoration of the He‘eia ahupua‘a”, “Algae overload on Maui”, “Microbial pollution in Hilo Bay”, and much more!

Preliminary Teacher Inquiry Results • Inquiry Teaching Assessment = significant pre-post gains (t = 2.25; p = 0.034; effect size = 0.51) • Pedagogical Content Knowledge Scale = significant pre-post gains (t = 2.36; p = .024; effect size = .39) • Self-Efficacy Scale = significant pre-post gains (t = 9.24; p < .001; effect size = 1.35). • On post-cohort interviews, teachers reported TSI provided very helpful tools and approaches for teaching and learning the scientific process.

Preliminary Teacher Content Results • Content scores increases in pre-post results across all modules (Physical, Chemical, Biological, and Ecological) • from 62%-71% to 72%-82%. • All four pre-post comparisons (combined across cohorts) were statistically significant at the .05 level (effect sizes ranged from .46 to 1.08).)

Preliminary Student Results • Nature of Science Assessment = significant pre-post gains (t = 6.38; p < .001; effect size = 0.28) • Nature of Science Scale = gain pre-post of 0.14 (10-point scale) • Students in Cohorts 4 and 5 will also complete a Student Self-Efficacy in Science Scale as well as module specific Student Content Assessments.

  16. Voice of the Sea Sharing Voices of Knowledge from Around the Pacific • Episodes being embeded in Exploring Our Fluid Earth (EOFE) online curricular materials • In application to be aired on PBS • Collaborating with Ephraim Temple in American Samoa for part of Season 2
