  1. Child Abuse By: Deonise Mondestin & Pajuah Purnell Pd:5 February ,2012

  2. Child Abuse: What is it? • The physical or psychological/emotional mistreatment of children • Types: • Neglect • Physical • Psychological/Emotional • Sexual

  3. Did You Know? • Every 5 days, the equivalent of a classroom of American children die from abuse or neglect. • It is estimated 1 out of 2 American children will be directly harmed by this problem. • The U.S. has more child abuse deaths than any other industrialized nation, ranking highest in both the total number of deaths. • The U.S. is one of the only 2 countries that has not ratified the United Nations treaty protecting children.

  4. Scope of child abuse! • Child abuse is a worldwide/nationwide problem affecting children from birth to 18 years of age. • Drawn primarily from data reported by State child protective service agencies to the National Child abuse and Neglect Data System.

  5. Who's Affected and How? • Here are percentages of the numbers of children that have suffered through child abuse/neglect in 2008. • More than 70% of children were neglected. • More than 15% were physically abused. • Less than 10% were sexually abused. • Less than 10% were psychologically abused. • In the long run, an estimated 1,750 of children died of abuse or neglect. • The true number of children who are abused or neglected is not known. Many cases, especially those involving young children, are not recognized or reported. As a result, many abused or neglected children suffer in silence. • Children of all ages can be victims of any of these types of abuse. But younger children are more likely to be physically abused and to suffer more serious injuries than older children

  6. Root Cause Of This Situation? • There are many root causes to this situation. But, I’m just going to list the main important ones. • Breakdown of the family • Lack of respect for one another in society in general • Frustration • Financial Peril • Parental Inexperience • Difficult Behavior • Ineffective Punishment • Anger • Etc.

  7. Child Abuse Story! Very Sad  • In another disgusting excuse for human life, a woman’s boyfriend, Carlnelus Delaney Simmons, age 37, reportedly took her 16 month old son, Jabraylon Bables, and dipped him into a pot of boiling water. According to The Dallas Morning News, the baby suffered for 36 days before succumbing to his grotesque and brutal injuries. He was presumably in agonizing pain, as his burns covered most of his lower body and melted the skin off his body and of which subsequently became infected. Jabraylon’s biological father has been in prison most of his young life and has only been able to reconnect with him 2 months prior to the assault on the child. • The mother, Jasmine Thompson, appears to be supportive of her boyfriend whom she met after the baby’s father went to prison and who has allegedly tortured her defenseless baby, calling him a “good person”, even though he spent 15 years in prison for murdering another man.

  8. What Can we Do? • 1. Education. Programs and education need to be provided for children that have already been abused. The child grows up with a messed up view on parenting and one way to prevent hereditary abuse from flowing down the generations to educate these children in the correct parenting techniques and also anger management. • 2. Advertising. A good TV campaign on child abuse will highlight and remind people that it is never okay to hit a child and may prevent someone from hurting their child. • 3. Cheep, safe childcare opportunities. This would help both parents who work and also at home parents. It can be stressful being at home with your child all day and having an opportunity to put your child into childcare for a few hours may release the stress and tension and the parents will be happy to look after the child again.

  9. The End • As you can see, child abuse is a serious dilemma that affects children from all over the world. So if we take action we can reduce the point of this ever happening.
