  3. What is i2b2? source: https://www.i2b2.org/ i2b2 - Informatics for Integrating Biology & the Bedside An advanced cohort discovery and analysis tool NIH-funded National Center for Biomedical Computing based at Partners Health Care System Adopted by the CTSA network

  4. UMi2b2 Cohort vs. iFeasible Easier to use interface Increased number of health system clinical data sources Becoming the standard for cohort discovery at other leading research institutions Recently Approved as a pre-IRB, pre-grant cohort discovery tool

  5. Our Priorities Enable researchers to more effectively identify potential research subjects for clinical trials. Advance clinical trial recruitment and improve health care research at the University of Michigan.

  6. Who uses i2b2? Boston University Case Western Reserve University Weill Cornell Medical College Duke University Harvard Medical School Kaiser Permanente Health Medical College of Wisconsin The Ohio State University Oregon Health & Science University Mayo Clinic Medical University of South Carolina Northwestern University Tufts Medical Center University of Alabama at Birmingham University of California, Davis University of California, San Francisco University of Chicago University of Cincinnati University of Massachusetts Medical School University of Michigan University of Pennsylvania University of Pittsburgh University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas University of Utah University of Washington University of Wisconsin – Madison

  14. “Navigate Terms” Tab & Options • Control the number of rows to display • Any search term concepts set as invisible will be shown • Show search concept synonyms Allows for drag & drop of query concepts Provides hierarchical display of related search terms

  15. “Find Terms” Tab • Search by Names: • Words & Word Fragments • Exact Phrases • Search by Codes: • Select coding system • Enter appropriate code

  16. “Query Tool” • Workspace to build queries • Combine search concepts to assemble and refine queries • Groups can further be defined by: • Date ranges • Number of occurrences • Exclusion of criteria • Run Query • New Query

  17. Query Options & Status Options: controls query timeout value Status: displays progress of queries being run and record of query results

  18. “Previous Queries” & Options • Controls total number of queries to display from query history • Manage query sort order: • Name • Creation Date Provides a record of queries executed by the user Displays either default or assigned names Queries can be reused

  19. “Workplace” • Allows users to share queries with colleagues • Allows for local storage of queries: • Series of refined queries • Build template queries

  20. UMi2b2 Cohort Use Case Assume that we would like to discover the number of diagnoses at the University of Michigan Health System of Appendicitis in adult male patients during 2010. Log in: https://i2b2.med.umich.edu Requires University-issued Level-2 user name and password and completion of MCIT-led UMi2b2 Cohort user training course.

  21. Answers & More Practice: • Answers to Scenario # 1: 209 Patients • Research Scenario #2: Determine the number of patients with the following CPT codes during 2009: • 21172, 21175, 21179 (28) • Research Scenario #3: Determine the number of patients with Sjogren’s (710.2) and Lung Disease (515) going back to January 2007. (180) • Research Scenario #4: Determine the number of patients with a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa (307.1) and Diabetes Mellitus (250) going back to January 2006. (8)
