  2. Ekklesia→ Church • Ekklesia: • ek→ “out of” • Klesis → “a calling” • Used of a general assembly • Acts 19:32: “The assembly” • Acts 19:39: “lawful assembly” • Used in secular Greek to refer to a popular assembly—one called together for a specific purpose (as in Acts 19).

  3. The Church→A Designated ekklesia • To know which assembly we are talking about, two things must be brought to mind: • The person/organization who calls the assembly together. • Purpose for which the assembly is called. • These criteria establish the significance of the ekklesia!

  6. The ekklesia that belongs to Christ • Matt. 16:18: Jesus said, “My Church” • It belongs to Him. • He purchased it with His own blood (Acts 20:28). • He purchased it for a specific purpose (Titus 2:13-14). • Through the gospel we are called to be a part of this assembly (2 Thess. 2:14).

  7. How many ekklias belong to Christ? Ephesians 4:1, 3-5 • “One Body” (vs. 3) • “One hope of our calling” (vs. 4) • “One Lord” (vs. 5) There Is Only One Church!

  8. Which church is the ekklesia that belongs to Christ? Remember the Criteria:-Person, Purpose- • The church that is called by Christ (PERSON). • The church that fulfills the PURPOSE for which Christ called it!

There are many churches in the world.Notice to WHOM they give their allegiance. 1 Corinthians 1:12-13The church that is of Christ… • Not called by “Paul,” “Apollos,” “Cephas.” • Not called by Pope, Luther, Meno Simons, Smyth, Wesley, etc. By holding to names other than Christ, We are saying that it was not Christ who called us!

There are many churches in the world.Notice whose PURPOSE they fulfill. 1 Corinthians 1:12-13The church of Christ… • Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints: fulfill Joseph Smith’s purpose. • International Church of Christ, fulfill worldly purposes. • Many other churches of Christ fulfill Human desires (food, entertainment, instrumental music, social activities, etc.) By doing things other than what Christ commanded,We are saying that it was not Christ who called us!

  13. How do we know which church is Christ’s church? • Study the Bible! • Test all things! Disguise? Men? Christ?

How do we know which church is Christ’s church? • Study the Bible! • Test all things! • Has Christ as its head (Col. 1:18) • Fulfills the purpose for which Christ called it (Eph. 4:1) • Follows the traditions established by Christ (1 Cor. 11:2; 2 Thess. 2:15). • Rejects that which is not from Christ (1 Tim. 4:7; 1 Thess. 5:21-22). • Its home is in heaven, not on this earth Christ?

  15. Conclusion • Many ekklasias • But only one ekklesia of Christ • Together, we must choose whether or not this congregation is an ekklesia that belongs to Christ.
