Greetings • Saying Assalam O Alykum (gods blessings be upon you). • Youngers say salam first • Elders putting palms over the heads of younger ones and blessing them • Handshaking and hugging only same sex • Not laughing in a louder voice in the presence of elders. • Avoiding direct eye contact with elders • Keeping the heads and eyes lowered in front of elders.

Belief About Hospitality/Socialising • Basically a segregated culture • Guests are welcome anytime , and considered blessings • Host go out of way to make guests comfortable • Guests do not contribute to chores, just sit and enjoy • Impolite for guests to help themselves to food without being invited • Live in guests and frequent family visits and gatherings , parties and feasts are very common • Unannounced guests are welcomed too with all the protocols.

Role of Family • Extended family systems • Family very caring and provide economic support to each other. • Collective decisions about major aspects of life (marriage, career etc.) • Mostly men dominated being the one whose prime responsibility is family’s wellbeing. • Going against family is a major social offense. • Every family/clan has their own rules and norms.

Food and Eating • Eating together at least one meal in day. • Meal times are social time • Meat from animals killed in certain way as described in religion--- the Halal meat • Pork and alcohol areprohibited by religion. • Food is generally very spicy and aromatic. • People eat by hands and also with cutlery • Fast food like pizza and burgers are popular among kids. • Staple is eaten more in quantity.

Attitudes about Personal Space and Privacy • Teenagers and young adults are not given much privacy--- most of their business is entire family’s business. • Children are expected to respect adult privacy strictly– no interference. • Guests are expected to respect the privacy of the hosts---important for yes students. • Blood and close relatives and friends get different protocol • Most children share rooms with other siblings or same sex • Most YES kids come from congested urban living environments, some from villages up Northern Pakistan.

  23. What can be the factors shaping the Pakistani culture!!!!! • Religion • Family • Keeping up with the modern age developments • Fear of loosing identity-deep rooted cultural norms and practices • Social conflict between primary and secondary groups

  26. Pakistan teenagers live quiet protected lives, they are used to obeying their elders and parents and get along extremely well with extended families and elderly people. They do not confront or argue, generally extremely friendly , helps around the house and ever ready to make new friend. Why hosting a pakistani students is a great experience

Over the years Pakistani exchange students have a record of great academic performance in School, they get on honor roll, receive gold medals, awards and always outstanding in sports and other school activities, anyone can be proud to be their family for a year.   28. Pakistani students are from a country rich in colorful cultural heritage, great culinary arts, lovely handicrafts and beautiful outfit. Pakistani teenagers will not get into any personal relationship like boyfriends. girlfriends and sexual relationships due to cultural and religious restrictions, you will have less issues to handle having them in the family and community.
