  1. Energy Sources

  2. Non-renewable?

  3. Non-renewable • Finite (being depleted – will run out) • In general a form of potential energy released by human action

  4. Fossil fuels – Coal, oil, gas

  5. Nuclear fuels

  6. Renewable?

  7. Renewable • Will not run out (in the near future) • Mostly directly or indirectly linked with the sun (the exception is tidal energy)

  8. Photovoltaic cells

  9. Active solar devices

  10. Wind

  11. Wave

  12. Tidal

  13. Biomass

  14. World energy production

  15. Energy Density

  16. Energy Density • The energy that can be obtained from a unit mass of the fuel • J.kg-1 • If the fuel is burnt the energy density is simply the heat of combustion

  17. Energy density • Coal - 30 MJ.kg-1 • Wood - 16 MJ.kg-1 • Gasoline – 47 MJ.kg-1 • Uranium – 7 x 104 GJ.kg-1 (70000000 MJ.kg-1)

  18. Your task?

  19. Your task • You are going to investigate some energy sources and prepare a presentation for the group

  20. Energy Source presentation • explain how the resource is used to make electricity • be between 5 and 10 minutes long • use PowerPoint (a copy of which can be used by class members as a revision aid) • contain at least one joke, one calculation, one cartoon and at least one dog in a perilous situation • outline the advantages and disadvantages of the resource •  The best presentation will win two “I don’t need to do this homework” cards to be used at any time in year 11. • Your presentation will take place on Tuesday 11th May 2010

  22. What makes a good presentation? • Speaking slowly and clearly without notes

  23. What makes a good presentation? • Keeping the Powerpoint simple

  24. What makes a good presentation? • Being humourous

  25. What makes a good presentation? • Referencing your sources www.algoreisboring.org accessed 28/2/07

  26. What makes a good presentation? • Use interesting information! The sun is actually equivalent of 10 000 hydrogen bombs exploding every second!

  27. What makes a good presentation? • Use good pictures

  28. What makes a good presentation? • Being well prepared

  29. Get into pairs please.
