  1. BLACK HOLES ElverSivac

  2. What is a black hole? • Black holes are places where ordinary gravity has become so extreme that it overwhelms all other forces in the Universe. Once inside, nothing can escape a black hole's gravity — not even light.

  3. What causes a black hole to form? • A black hole is formed by the collapse of a massive star's core in a supernova.

  4. How near is the nearest black hole? • The nearest black hole is many lightyears away, so we don't have to worry about threats to the Earth. This is as close as you'll ever get to one.

  5. What gets sucked into a black hole? • One the interesting black hole facts is that they can not suck up all of the matter in the Universe. Each black hole has its own event horizon, much like the gravitational field of a planet. If matter is not in that horizon it will never get sucked into the black hole.

  6. How massive are black holes? • This one tips the scales on the heavy end as black hole facts go: there is a super massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. It weighs in at about 4 million solar masses

  7. How do black holes disappear? •  Black holes emit x-ray radiation and get smaller and smaller until they disappear, or "evaporate".

  8. How many black holes are there? • There are currently 14 known black holes. Astronomers think that at least one black hole is born every day.

  9. Could you travel in a black hole? • No. You would be killed by many things before you could enter the black hole. Gravity would pull you apart. X-rays and other forms of radiation would be lethal.

  10. What makes a black hole black? • The escape velocity of a black hole is greater than the speed of light therefore light doesn’t travel fast enough to escape it.
