APAs into publications… M5 – Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust/ University of Essex 06.12.2011
My experience • Motivation to publish • Formula for success??? • EPiP and other journals http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=0046-1520&linktype=44(Educational Psychologist) http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=0144-3410&linktype=44(Educational Psychology)
Useful steps to take • Make any amendments post M5-feedback • Cut down to size required/ proof read with care and with help of dictionaries/ guides to punctuation/ APA referencing guidelines, etc (some of these aids are available on http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/EPiP ) • Consult http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/EPiP as well as a recent hard copy of EPiP, Notes for contributors. Check out published articles on same/ similar topic as yours. Other websites to support authors are available (http://www.authoraid.info/resource-library )
Overarching questions to ask yourself: • Is the content relevant to EP practice? (Can you imagine other EPs trying out what you describe?) • Is the practical significance of the paper made explicit? (Have you drawn out clear links between theory and practice?) • Have you disclosed any interests/ acknowledgements? Have you consulted research/ case study participants to gain their consent? • Is this as sharp/ tight as it could possibly be? (Could your 6000 words manuscript be just as effective in 4000 words?)
More questions for yourself • Does layout conform to house style? (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/EPiP ) • Is there a clearly stated introduction? (Can reader get a sense of what you will do in the manuscript from the introduction) • Is there a well-summarised literature review? (M5 guidelines) • Is the procedure/design/descriptive/results section clear? (Wright, D. B. (2003). Making friends with your data: Improving how statistics are conducted and reported. British Journal of Educational Psychology, 73, 123-136) • Are data (if any) clearly presented? • Do references conform to house style? (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/EPiP ) • Is there any inappropriate language? (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/EPiP ) • Feedback from others • Once you are satisfied with the manuscript, follow instructions on how to submit on http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/EPiP
