  1. ESC102S – Praxis II – F3008-05 Design Critique Improving the Emergency System of the TTC along the Yonge-University-Spadina Line Wen Li, Tom Zhang, Jae Kim & Marcel Grzeszczyk

  2. Overview • Reframing • Scoping & requirements • Design Process • Goals of the solution • Early Ideas, sketches, prototype • Current Best Design • Idea Selection • Key Design Decisions & Considerations

  3. Reframing • Narrowed and prioritized scope. • Primary problem: accidental alarm activations. • Secondary problem: Activations due to human error. • Added Accessibility to list of requirements.

  4. Design Process Decomposed problem into more specific groups: • Leaning on emergency handle, pushing with elbow. • Grabbing emergency handle when losing balance. • Leaning on PAA strip with head. • Contacting PAA strip with large objects (skis, wheelchairs). • Lack of awareness (warning signs not effective). This was done while keeping the current functions of the emergency system such as safety and accessibility.

  5. Sketches & Brainstorming

  6. Current Best Design Outweighs other designs in criteria all-around. • Slightly altered warning sign. • Added warning lights. • Combined with Emergency Intercom. • Reduces accidental activations. • Increases efficiency of emergency response. • Added edges above and below. • Protect against objects touching alarm and leaning on alarm while maintaining accessibility.
