  2. Sam Houston as President Again • In 1841, Texans had to vote for a president • Once again they elected Sam Houston

  3. A Return to Houston’s Policy • Immediately after returning to office Houston put his plans for Texas back into action…especially re-opening talks with the U.S. about Texas joining their country

  4. WHY TEXANS WANT IN THE U.S. • Texans wanted to join the United States for several reasons • Texas had a lot of debt • The U.S. could help Texas solve their problems • Many people in Texas were from the U.S. • Texans feared Mexican attacks • Texans spoke the same language, had similar customs, and ideas about government • The United States could fulfill its desire to expand its territory • WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER!!! &

  6. Why The U.S. said “No” • The U.S. did not want the additional debt of Texas • The U.S. was fearful of war with Mexico • United States president and leaders did not want to have more slaves states than non-slave states

  7. Events Begin to Change • After Houston was re-elected, once again Texans felt they had a good chance of joining the U.S. • In April 1844, the president of the U.S. had his men create a treaty that would accept Texas into the U.S. as a territory • Texans accepted this treaty, however the U.S. senate did not • This event continued to make the annexation of Texas a hot debate for the U.S. presidential election of 1844

  8. Elections of 1844 • In 1844 both the United States and Texas held presidential elections • The U.S. elected James K. Polk – a man in favor of annexing Texas to the U.S. • Texas elected Anson Jones – a man in favor of Texas joining the U.S. • Significance – For the 1st time both presidents of these two countries were in favor of the annexation of Texas to the U.S.

  9. Now What??? • Shortly after the elections of 1844, Texans were presented the opportunity to become the 28th state in the United States • In the winter of 1845 Texas officially became apart of the United States
