  2. Gibraltar Experiment 1985-86 Acoustic backscatter of huge overturning billows on the sheared interface above Med water descending on the west side of the sill Microstructure sampling

  3. Bosphorus 1994 Profiling from RV Bilim Velocity vectors in 2-layer flow overlaid on acoustic image from northern end of channel Dots mark microstructure profiles

  4. Internal Waves & Mixing in the Aegean 2004 • Objectives • Toimprove understanding of internal wave interactions with steep topography in a region with weak tides • To quantify mixing in littoral regions produces by background internal waves, i.e. those not produced by local tidal currents • Preliminary Results • An intermittent but prominent internal tide was observed, contrary to expectations • Near-inertial motions had amplitudes similar to the internal tides • High-frequency internal waves had spectral shapes similar to Garrett & Munk but much smaller amplitudes • Mixing was concentrated near the sloping bottom, particularly around a small sea mount – maximum values were 0.001 m2/s • Internal waves and mixing increased with surface winds during a rapid change from summer to winter conditions. Major Performers: APL/UW (Gregg/Alford) Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Kontoyiannis), Univ. Aegean (Zervakis)
