Promoting Children's Rights in Education: The RRR Development Initiative

The RRR Development Initiative began with four pilot schools focused on human rights ownership, utilizing local authorities as facilitators. This program aims to enhance outcomes for children and young people by linking robust rationales to current educational issues. With training for approximately 400 Hampshire schools, it incorporates a strong research component and partners with UNICEF UK to implement the Rights Respecting School Award. This initiative aligns with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), adopted in 1989 and ratified by most countries, ensuring accountability for children's rights.

  1. RRR Development • Started with 4 Pilot schools - HT ownership – LA as broker/facilitator • Identify benefits- robust rationale, links to current issues, benefits to pupils & Heads tell their story • Wider approach to improving outcomes for children & young people • UNCRC as values framework.

  2. RRR Development • Training for Hants schools ( 400 approx) • Strong research component • Work with UNICEF UK – Rights Respecting School Award – offers criteria. In England, Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales. • About 180 schools in Hampshire either with or going for the award. • Not just for schools

  3. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) • UNCRC adopted by the United Nations on 20th November 1989. Rights in 54 articles. • Ratified by 192 out of 194 countries. • Each country reports back every 5 years. • The UK ratified it on 16th December 1991. • National governments commit to protecting and ensuring children's rights & hold themselves accountable before the international community.
