  2. Learning Target Today, students will be able to identify and apply comma rules 10-15.

  3. Rule #10 • Use a comma to shift between the main discourse and a quotation. • Example: • Incorrect: McKenna said "Nolan is so awesome!" • Where does the comma go?

  4. Correct Sentence  McKenna said, "Nolan is so awesome!"

  5. Rule #11 • Use commas wherever necessary to prevent possible confusion or misreading • Commas in the wrong places can break a sentence into illogical segments or confuse readers with unnecessary and unexpected pauses.

  6. Example Example:  Incorrect: To Johnny Alan was the coolest person ever. Correct: To Johnny, Alan was the coolest person ever.

  7. Common Comma Abuse

  8. Rule #12 • DO NOT use a commas to separate the subject from the verb.

  9. Example Incorrect: The most important attribute of a ball player, is quick reflex actions. Correct:  The most important attribute of a ball player is quick reflex actions.

  10. Rule #13 • DO NOTput a comma between the two verbs or verb phrases in a compound predicate. • (This is kind of the opposite of Rule #1- I will show you why…)

  11. Example Incorrect: We played in the sand, and began to relax.  Correct: We played in the sand and began to relax.

  12. Rule #14 • DO NOTput a comma between the two nouns, noun phrases, or noun clauses in a compound subject or compound object.

  13. Example Incorrect: My sister, and mom went to the movies together. Correct: My sister and mom went to the movies together.

  14. Rule #15 • DO NOT put a comma after the main clause when a dependent (subordinate) clause follows it • Except for cases of extreme contrast

  15. Example Incorrect: The cat scratched at the door, while I was eating. Correct: The cat scratched at the door while I was eating.

  16. Practice Correct the sentences on the following slides. Write the rule that corresponds! #10, #11, #12, #13, #14, #15

  17. Practice 1. John said without emotion "I'll see you tomorrow."

  18. Practice 2. An eighteen-year old in California, is now considered an adult.
