Why Gymnastics? • It is fun and challenging for all levels. • Children are given the opportunity to jump, roll, swing and turn upside down which they love to do. • It enhances the components of fitness, especially strength. • It provides an excellent foundation upon which children can build further.

  3. WhyGymnastics cont. • It can be taught using a small selection of equipment. • It can be taught indoors or outdoors. • It enables development and correction of emerging motor skills.

  4. Gym Fun • Aimed at primary school aged participants • Achievement award based. • Specifically designed for non-specialist personnel. • Requires little equipment. • No size, weight or gender restrictions.

  5. Gym Skills • Aimed at Secondary school aged participants. • Multiple entry points. • Based on dominant movement patterns. • Easy to use checklist format. • Designed for non-specialist personnel.

  6. Dominant Movement Patterns • Landings. • Statics. • Locomotion. • Rotation. • Spring. • Swing. • Group work is also integrated which fosters communication and other such group skills.

  7. Teaching Methods • Whole class format. • Circuits small or large. • Partner and group activities. • Follow the leader. • Self directed learning. • Incorporation of themes and patterns (level, space, time, flow, direction).

  8. Safety • A vital component of any teaching program especially gymnastics. • Your lesson methods can affect this. Keep the class moving and on task to avoid boredom which may lead to unsafe behaviour. • You are ultimately responsible for your students safety.

  9. Factors Affecting Safety • Student skill level. Ensure all students have the necessary skills to perform the task. Revisit the basics before moving on. • The teacher. Keep your eyes on the task. Ensure you can see all stations and situate yourself at the most difficult. • The environment. Space awareness of area you are using, surfaces to be used and equipment.

  10. Factors Affecting Safety Cont. • The program. What you will be teaching is just as important as how you deliver it i.e does each participant need a mat, group sizes and activity layout. • Warming up. Ensure all students are adequately warmed up to avoid injury. • Behaviour management. Be clear to participants of the consequences for unsafe behaviour.

  11. Why Assess? • To gain an understanding of the level of skill mastery. • To be aware of areas that require further work. • To provide an incentive for student learning. • To encourage the development of good techniques. • To give the students some feedback. • To evaluate your own teaching.
