What are some of the topics? • Shared caring for country messages • The role of TO's and elders in maintaining culture and links to country • Interpreting the environment through all senses • The significance of country to community and culture • Impacts of development and human activities on country • Identification of flora and fauna and its traditional use • Land and sea country boundaries • Key indicators in the seasonal cycles of land and sea country • Accessing the knowledge of elders • Protocols and sensitivities when addressing TO's and elders • Native Title Rights and the right to take for cultural purposes • Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements (TUMRA) as a means of maintaining sustainability • Managing compliance • The role of community and GBRMPA in managing compliance • The role of the Ranger (Community, QPWS, GBRMPA Inspector)

Some of the learning’s By the conclusion of SAP participants will be able to describe/apply: • Boundaries of country that is under custodianship of the local community • Sensory learning techniques –’getting to know country and place’ • Local patterns of the seasons • Key seasonal indicators for both land and sea country • Key species and their link to cultural values • The role of community, TO's, elders, and custodians in caring for country • The role of the TUMRA in protecting the values of sea country • The concept of compliance as a key strategy for caring for country • The role of Community Rangers, GBRMPA, QPWS and Queensland Fisheries Officers in caring for country

Benefits • Provides examples of leadership through local mentors • Exposure to local natural and cultural resource management • Increases public awareness of local Indigenous knowledge, values and people • Complements existing programs and land/sea management activities • Non-confrontational, an alternative approach with connecting communities through Indigenous environmental education

  11. Where to from here? • The development of SAP as a toolkit for TO's to use • Transference for TO's • Feel the process - visualise it in action • Assist with the planning and preparation of SAP within their areas (as required)
