  9. How can you tell that someone is dead? Can you tell how long they’ve been dead?

  10. Hours since death = 98.4°F – internal body temperature 1.5 The Process of Death Algor Mortis: Body cooling rate Livor Mortis: skin discoloration caused by pooling of blood Rigor Mortis: rigidity of skeletal muscles

  13. Estimating time of death

  14. 1. Initial or fresh decay (autolysis) • The cadaver appears fresh externally but is decomposing internally due to the activities of bacteria present before death (0–4 days).

  15. 2. Putrefaction or bloating • The cadaver is swollen by gas produced internally, accompanied by the odor of decaying flesh (4–10 days).

  16. 3. Black putrefaction • Flesh of creamy consistency, with exposed body parts black. Body collapses as gases escape. Fluids drain from body. Odor of decay very strong (10–20 days).

  17. 4. Butyric fermentation Cadaver drying out. Some flesh remains at first; cheesy odor from butyric acid (20–50 days)

  18. 5. Dry decay • Cadaver almost dry; slow rate of decay. May mummify (50–365 days).

  19. Open pbs link on Edmodo. Take notes as you go through the virtual lab. This will be collected .

  20. CSI Web Adventure • Take a laptop computer. 2. Open the pdf file uploaded on Edmodousing Notability. 3. Go to the website written on the sheet. 4. Complete the web adventure and answer the questions. (START WITH MEDICAL EXAMINER. PERFORM THE INTERNAL AUTOPSY.)

During Classwork Time • Stay focused on the assignments you are given. • Do the questions INDEPENDENTLY (on your own). • Keep the noise level down. • Ask THREE before you ask ME. • You may put earphones on and listen to music quietly as you do your work. • You must finish a certain number of questions (depends on the person) by the end of the period.

  22. Exit Slip • Describe how you can estimate how long a person has been dead for. Email to gutierrezbr@elizabeth.k12.nj.us with p8 in the subject line.
