  3. Beginnings • Full Name - YiannisHyssomallis • Born on November 14th 1954 • Raised in Kalamata, Greece Kalamata

  4. Youth • Yiannis was very active in his youth • At the age of 14 he broke the Greek national 50-meter freestyle record

  5. The Next Step • Yiannis graduated from the Greek public education system • He moved to the United States to attend college at the University of Minnesota • He graduated with a bachelors degree in Psychology

  6. Musical Career Entry • After college graduation Yanni pursued music as a career by joining the Chameleons • The band was formed in Minneapolis in the late 70’s and lasted till the early 80’s "Yanni on the keyboard for Chameleons”

  11. Acropolis Production • The Acropolis was chosen to be his venue for his largest concert and musical production yet! • Yanni spent 2 million dollars of his own personal fortune to fund the “Acropolis Production”

  12. Live at the Acropolis • The production was a worldwide success! • The entire concert was filmed and later published on VHS and CD • Only MJ’s thriller topped its view rating

  13. Listening Guide - Santorini • 0:05 - The music enters in with sharp energetic tempo, it is composed mainly of violins. Giving the music a sense of continual build up • 0:45 - We begin to hear the different instrument in the orchestra making small but noticeable injunction into the music. Now creating the texture of a more full atmosphere, knowing that there is more than just the violins and the trumpet. This also slightly increases the dynamics of the music which is exciting. • 1:15 - We have a sharp change in melody and texture, with the addition of some chords which are being played that sound ominous. Almost like jaws is after you. But this just plays as another buildup on the dynamics, and overall excitement of the beginning of the piece as these chords are short lived.

  14. Santorini Continued • 1:52 - We now start to see a build of the background texture again with the addition of new instruments to accompany. And the dynamics of the song once again start to increase. • 2:10 - We now see yet another bridge which leads us back to the original form and texture of the song. With the same violins in the background, building up pressure and suspense once more. • 2:45 - During this piano solo segment it is very easy to pick up the rhythm as being in 4/4 timing. • 4:00 - The segment reaches a soft bursting climax. All the elements remain rather untouched. • 4:14 - There is an inclusion of a violin playing downward melody that is almost sad sounding. Which causes the texture of the song to become somewhat sad as well. Alluding to a reflective moment in which you can ponder.

  15. Santorini Continued • 5:00 - We have another bridge transition that takes us right back to the original form texture and tempo of the introduction of the song. Almost as if it were starting again. • 5:30 - Again the continuous buildup of adding the drums, and the seeming approach of an impending climax. • 6:00 - The climax approaches stronger than ever, with repeated chords and drum beats. And increased dynamics and volume that is higher than any other part of the song. • 6:30 - The texture of the song becomes soft again, in a drawn out concluding melody. The dynamics show sign of fading and the timbre has mellowed. • 6:40 - The final conclusive note of the song, with immediate fadeout. Signifying the complete conclusion of the piece.

  16. Listening Guide – One Man’s Dream • 0:05 - The piece begins with 4 repeated progressive piano notes. Which first of all tells us that the rhythm is set in a 4/4 time. It also instantly establishes the texture of the song as being almost dreamlike. It also gives us a consistent tempo to work with, thus also helping create the forms foundation. • 0:30 - The background texture is no longer being established by the piano, it is and flirts with sadness but does not quite cross its boundary now that of the violins with the piano on the foreground. • 1:10- We now have the inclusion of the harp and the violin which create a more filled out texture. The timbre is also affected as well, and the songs dynamics also increase slightly. • 1:40- We see that the instruments are all keeping the form rather uniform by all performing the same melody, but all at different times, taking turns. It also changes the pitch at which the same melody is played, which does have an effect on the overall texture of the song as well.

  17. One Man’s Dream Cont. • 2:16 - We now have several different chords being played by several different instruments, that creates a more rapid texture that isn't as smooth and more contrasting. But they all blend very nicely. • 2:30 - We have a second climactic increase in the dynamics with flare. And an increase in the amount of different chords are being played simultaneously. • 3:00 - The song begins to slow as the melodies and extra chords stop playing together. • 3:22 - The final note of the song fades out. And the volume and dynamics decrease slowly.

  18. Listening Guide - Reflections Of Passion • 0:05 - The music begins with a long drawn out note of the piano, which only really shows the dynamics of the song. Although there is a mystical rainfall sound emanated in the background which sets the texture and mood of the song as that of slightly enchanting as it is interwoven with the sound of the individual notes from the piano. • 0:30 - The tempo of the song is now set. We also now include new instruments which create a fuller texture. We also now see for the first time that the rhythm of the song is actually done in a 3/4 scale, the same in which you would perform a waltz to. • 0:45 - We begin to see the dynamics increase as well as the tempo making way for a climax. • 1:25 - We now have a change in the pitch in which the melody is being performed, and the dynamics continually indicate that we are yet going to reach yet another climax in the song.

  19. Reflections of Passion Cont. • 1:45 - We have a sharp increase in the volume and overall dynamics of the music. The melody culminates and repeats louder and louder until it explodes. The timbre of the music is much higher. And we now enter what feels like the full energy of the song. • 1:50 - The texture is very powerful with intermixtures of several different chords being played simultaneously. And the music now feels like that of a big ballroom dance with many people. • 2:28 - The texture quickly softens. The tempo slows dramatically and shows a much softer timbre of the song. The melody is also not as complex anymore. • 2:39 - The music once again builds up as the dynamics increase and the melody is yet again added upon with another instrument to play in harmony.

  20. Reflections of Passion Cont. • 3:05 - A drum beats a powerful note that then quiets the rest of the song. The texture become very soft once again, and the dynamics make it seems as if that could be the end of the song as the volume fades. • 3:53 - The melody is mostly unchanging in the background while we now have the inclusion of a relaxing instrument that comes to the foreground. This simply adds to the dreamlike texture and feeling of the song. The dynamics are also kept at a relaxing low level that is almost so you can be in a contemplative state. • 4:35 - We hear all of the instruments finish their chords together and create and very conclusive effect. Signifying to conclusion of the piece.
