PAWS Time is a dedicated literacy intervention and enrichment program designed to help all students meet their MAP reading goals without missing other subjects. Taking place Monday through Thursday from 8:45 to 9:15 AM, this initiative involves classroom teachers, special education teachers, instructional aides, and more. Through methods like PALS (Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies) and personalized instruction based on various assessments, students engage in structured activities that promote higher achievement in reading. Training and assessments guide our approach, ensuring tailored support over rotating cycles.

Purpose of PAWS Time… • Provide intervention and enrichment for students in literacy • Avoid students missing other subjects to receive intervention/enrichment • Help all students reach their MAP goal in reading by providing additional individualized literacy instruction
Who will be involved in PAWS Time? • All Hands on Deck • Classroom Teachers • Special Ed Teachers • Specialists • Instructional Aides • Title I Teacher • Interventionists • IRT Go Pumas!
When will PAWS Time happen? • Monday through Thursday 8:45-9:15 • Beginning Early November • PALS for all students during the first 4 weeks • New rotation every 6-8 weeks thereafter

What is PALS? • Supplemental Reading Program • A scientifically based and feasible practice promoting higher achievement • Based on 15 years of research through Vanderbilt University • Students are paired and take turns being the tutor and tutee for structured activities
How does PALS work? • Teachers train students to correctly use the structured activities • Scripted materials guide teachers through training of students • Structured activities focus on key skills in reading and promote student engagement
K-PALS • Letter Sound Correspondence • Phonemic Awareness • Early Decoding • Word Identification • Sentence Reading
1st Grade PALS • Letter Sound Correspondence • Phonemic Awareness • Early Decoding • Word Identification • Sentence and Story Reading • Fluency Building Activities
2nd – 5th Grade PALS • Fluency Development • Comprehension Focus • Partner Reading with Retells • Paragraph Shrinking • Prediction Relay
PAWS Time – The First 4 Weeks • All students will be trained in PALS • Student partners will be matched using MAP reading data • Teachers, Specialists and Instructional Aides will be paired to implement PALS
PAWS Time – Into the Future • After 4 weeks of PALS training, we will begin intervention/enrichment along with PALS • Instructional Aides and Specialists will supervise PALS while classroom, special ed and Title I teachers work with students in intervention/enrichment • New rotation every 7 weeks
