E N D
Towards Zero • Focused on cars, not on people • People focus = is it safe for vulnerable road users? • People are afraid to walk and cycle • Many societal and personal benefits in getting people out of cars, into active transport
What can the Road Safety Council do? • Legislate a safe passing distance • Reduce speed on designated roads • Better education for road users
Legislate a safe passing distance • Most frequent serious cycle accident is being hit by a car travelling in the same direction • Legislated one metre as the minimum passing distance • Support the “one metre matters” campaign
Reduce speed on designated roads • Hit at 30kmh = alive (Hit at 60kmh = dead) • PBN suggests where cyclist should ride • Re-focus PBN on trains, schools, shops etc • Massive casualty reductions in London with 20 mph zones • Make it safe – 08/80 rule
Better education road users • Re-test drivers when renewing their licence • Drivers who “loose” licence re-enter system as novice drivers • Driving causing bodily harm becomes assault
Safe roads for everyone • Safe for children, old people, people on gopher cars and people using bicyles • Less people killed and seriously injured, less congestion, less obesity, longer and better life, less costs to society
The Road Safety Council has the power to initiate the transition towards a safe passing distance, a network of low-speed roads and more tolerant car drivers. • Let’s make it happen!
