The Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science

Discover the characteristics that help polar bears and tigers survive in their habitats. Explore the concept of adaptation and learn how species develop traits over time. Engage in activities to understand variation and natural selection. Learn about fossils and how they provide evidence of ancient organisms.

  1. The Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science Middle Childhood Presentation Grades 3 - 5

  2. What characteristics does the polar bear possess to survive in its habitat? • What about the tiger? • What would happen if we switched the animals?

  3. Let’s talk vocabulary…what do these words mean? Species Population Variation Adaptation

  4. Species A group of similar living things that is made up of individuals able to produce offspring with one another

  5. Population Members of the same speciesthat live in the same place at the same time.

  6. Variation A property of a population that occurs when individuals within a population differ in the characteristics.

  7. Adaptation The Process by which animal and plant species develop characteristics over time which help them survive in their habitats.

  8. Describe what you see. • Which trait do you think will help a gazelle survive if the cheetah begins to chase them? • Which gazelles might be caught by the cheetah? • Over time, what do you think happened to the gazelle population? The population of gazelles adapted!

  9. Resource 1: Not all animals or plants in a population survive. Who survives? Natural Selection

  10. Resource 2: Not all of the animals or plants in a population are exactly the same. Darwin's Game of Survival

  11. Resource 3: Example of Adaptation Why Are Sloths So Slow??

  12. Resource 4: Example of Adaptation The Wild World of Carnivorous Plants

  13. Resource 5: How does a changing habitat affect how species change over time? This Lab is for the Birds

  14. Resource 6 Fossils and Dinosaurs

  15. 2 1 What is a fossil? 4 5 3 Fossils are the traces of ancients organisms. Match the pictures with the type of fossil.1. actual body parts2. imprints left behind 3. imprints filled by minerals4. actual body in tree sap 5. remains replaced by minerals

  16. How do fossils form?

  17. The Fossilization Game Preparation: Teacher needs to print the fossilization cards from the following link. https://ucmp.berkeley.edu/fosrec/Breithaupt2.html#FIG3

  18. Fossilization Horse vs Stegosaurus

  19. 1. All About Sue As you go through this resource, think about answers to these questions. • What do we know about Sue? • How do we know all of these things? • What is the significance of finding Sue? • How do we know this?  All About Sue
