  2. What characteristics does the polar bear possess to survive in its habitat? • What about the tiger? • What would happen if we switched the animals?

  3. Let’s talk vocabulary…what do these words mean? Species Population Variation Adaptation

  4. Species A group of similar living things that is made up of individuals able to produce offspring with one another

  5. Population Members of the same speciesthat live in the same place at the same time.

  6. Variation A property of a population that occurs when individuals within a population differ in the characteristics.

  7. Adaptation The Process by which animal and plant species develop characteristics over time which help them survive in their habitats.

  8. Describe what you see. • Which trait do you think will help a gazelle survive if the cheetah begins to chase them? • Which gazelles might be caught by the cheetah? • Over time, what do you think happened to the gazelle population? The population of gazelles adapted!
