  2. East Tennessee attractions East Tennessee offers dozens of outdoor and indoor recreational, educational, and cultural attractions. The Great Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Mountains are a few miles away. Outstanding hiking, camping, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, and sightseeing are available in national and state parks, national forests, and wild and scenic areas. Tennessee Valley Authority lakes are perfect for water sports and fishing. Dozens of golf courses provide year-round golfing. The University of Tennessee football team and the 5-time national champion Lady Vols basketball team play in Knoxville and the Class AA Tennessee Smokies, a Cubs affiliate, in nearby Sevierville. The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Museum of Appalachia, the Knoxville Zoo, and Dollywood theme park are local attractions. For more refined tastes, there are symphony, ballet, opera, and choral music companies. For more down-home tastes, East Tennessee is the bluegrass capital of the world, and scruffy clubs in Knoxville offer musical entertainment in every genre. To stimulate the intellect, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville hosts several different lecture series during the year.
