  7. Isaiah 52:13-53:12 <See Handout>

  8. I.The Messiah would not come from fame (Reference Isaiah 53:2) • Why do you think God wanted the Messiah to be born in obscurity to an "average" family? • How might the New Testament have been different if Jesus had been born to a wealthy or powerful family

  9. II.The Messiah would not be defended (Reference Isaiah 53:8a) • How would Jesus' story have been different if someone influential had stopped his crucifixion?

  10. III.The Messiah would take the punishment for our sin (Reference Isaiah 53:4-6) • Why would Jesus-the Messiah-willingly pay a price for sin that he didn't commit? • How would our lives be different today if Jesus hadn't paid our punishment on the cross? • Would you ever willingly take the punishment for something a friend did? Why or why not?

  11. IV. Additional Discussion • Have you ever looked through the different prophecies about the Messiah? What did you discover that was interesting? • Why did Jesus need to take our punishment (Isaiah 53:4-6)? Couldn't we have done something to earn forgiveness? • Think about your life and the sins Jesus died for; do you see yourself as an "average" sinner, as someone who sins more than most teenagers do, or someone who sins less often than others? Why?

  12. IV. Application • How might these prophecies about Jesus being the Messiah strengthen your belief in him? • How can these prophecies help you share your faith with others? • In what ways can you show your thankfulness that Jesus suffered the consequences for your mistakes (your sin)?

  13. V. Summary Isaiah 52:13-53:12 • The Messiah would not come from Fame (Is 53:2) • The Messiah would not be defended (Is 53:8a) • The Messiah would take the punishment for our sin (Is 53:4-6)
