Authors’ Craft • What is important to remember is that words have two different ideas attached to them: connotation which is what the word makes us think about and picture AND denotation which is how the dictionary defines a word. • When author’s write they MUST think about WORD CHOICE because words have thoughts and feelings attached to them as well as definition. • Author’s actively think about what readers will feel or picture when they come across a specific word.

It is so short you will be able to read it in a matter of minutes. • As you read the story, I want you to pay particular attention to connotation. • When a story is this short an author must really make word choices especially precise. Each word has to get across the perfect connotation so that the reader leaves with what the author intended. • As you read and reread this story, jot down words that you think were deliberate choices on the part of the author. • Then jot down what you picture, the connotation. • Pick the best five or six.
Discuss the Story • Turn to your partner and share the words that you picked out and why. • Talk about why the author chose those words as opposed to another word that might have similar denotations or dictionary definitions.
