  2. Intent of the Challenge: To solve this Challenge, the team must design and build Equipment to detect and remove hidden Objects. The team will use the Equipment to detect and remove the hidden Objects from randomly selected team-provided Containers. The Equipment must use Technical Methods to complete these tasks. The team will move the found Objects from the Start Area to across the Finish Line. The detection, removal and movement of Objects will be integrated into a team-created Story about detecting things that are not evident to humans. 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  3. Regardless of what we tell you during this training, our presentation is “our interpretation” of the Challenge. ONLY the International Challenge Masters can give a binding ruling on a team's question or questions. We strongly suggest for any questionable topic or specific way your team intends to do something that you need to submit a formal clarification. The Deadline to ask for a team clarification is February 15th. The last two pages of this presentation list the 3 published clarifications to date. Please update your copy of the challenge with the clarification #3 in Section a.3.c 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  4. Time Limit: 8 minute presentation Budget: $185 • Design and build equipment to detect objects in their hiding places. • Use team designed and built equipment to take the objects out of their hiding places. The Equipment must use Technical Methods to complete these tasks • Move objects across the finish line, “using team equipment to accomplish this move may earn higher scores” •Create and present a story about detecting things that are not evident to humans which Integrates detection, removal and movement of Objects • Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents. 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  5. Presentation Site Size Minimum Size: 20 ft by 20 ft Min Height: 10 ft (can use whatever is provided) Floor Surface: Hard such as wood, linoleum, concrete, very short-napped carpet. Electrical Power: Single 3-prong electrical at edge of Presentation site Only Solid lines of Start Area and the FINISH line will be taped on the floor 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  6. Objects:team provides 10 physical Objects • do not have to be the same (shape, size, color, etc.). • large enough to be visible from 25 feet away • must fit completely inside a closed Container • cannot visibly distort the shape of a Container • Containers: team provides 16 Containers. • labeled with whole numbers from 1 through 16. • have a surface that can be broken or opened by team-created Equipment • must be large enough to hold an Object • all 16 Containers must fit 100% in 3-dimensional boundaries of the Start Area • Object and Container Placement: The team will name one or more of its team members to be • “ theObject Placement Specialist(s) (OPS).” • The OPS will • randomly select 10 cards from the appraiser provided cards numbered 1 - 16. • place one Object in each Container that matches the numbers on the 10 cards • The numbers on the cards must remain hidden from the rest of the team • will then close all of the Containers • will place all closed Containers in the Start Area before the 8-minute Presentation time begins. • will place Containers in the approximate location shown on the diagram on the Tournament Data Form • The OPSwill NOT • communicate the contents of any Container to the Equipment or to another team member • operate Equipment during the Presentation 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0 6

  7. Equipment: The team must design and build Equipment that utilizes Technical Methodsto detect Objects, open Containers, and remove Objects. • may be one device or multiple devices. • cannot be a team member • may move Objects across the Finish Line • Scoring will consider all pieces of team-created Equipment that attempt to • detect Objects • open Containers • remove Objects • move Objects across the Finish Line. • Technical Design: the Technical methods are: • Reliable - how often it works? always, sometimes, seldom or once • Effective - performs task flawlessly versus struggles to perform task or not • Efficient - minimal effort or steps versus complicated-many steps or much effort • Technical Innovation: theTechnical methods are: • New/Unique/original- never seen before versus commonly performed • Elegant - concise or simple, stylishly graceful, good taste, clean, smooth • Risky / Difficult / complex - low chance it all works well 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  8. Story: Team will • will create and present a Story that highlights a technology that helps detect something that a human normally could not sense • team will designate a Characterthat works with the highlighted technology. • The designated Character can be anything: • animate or inanimate, • real or imaginary, • team member • or prop 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  9. Team Choice Elements:DO NOT overlook the importance of TCEs! • Teams must present TWO creations to show off their interests or creative skills • Create anything they wish including props, music, gadgets, costumes, physical actions, rhymes, etc. • Both items must be presented within the 8 minutes to receive a score • Must have a meaningful connection to the overall theme and presentation • Must NOT be a specific item already required or receiving a score elsewhere; can be a standalone part of something already receiving a score, but NOTHING can receive a double score • Each worth up to 30 points, making TCE’s worth up to 60 points total 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  10. Central Challenge Scoring PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0

  11. Sorry But … • no Container bonus • for unbroken or unopened Containers that are visibly empty • no Object score • for objects detected or removed while an OPS is operating Equipment • for object location detectable in container before time begins • no Object score and no Container Bonus • If OPS communicates Container contents to the Equipment or another team member • for obviously misplaced containers • There is no deduction for incomplete or missing tournament DATA forms. The appraisers will not be able to AWARD any points if there is no diagram. A team can be given the opportunity in the prep area to create a diagram 2013-2014 DIG IN Rev 1.0
