  1. CPM Section 5.1A “Solving Linear Equations”

  2. The objective in solving an equation is to find _______________________________________________ The value(s) of the variable that makes the equation true An equation can be solved using properties studied in chapter 1

  3. Distributive Property______________________________ Addition Property: If a=b, then______________________________ Subtraction Property: If a=b, then______________________________ Multiplication Property: If a=b, then______________________________

  4. Rules to solving equations: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Distribute If there are fractions, find the LCD and eliminate the Denominator Combine like terms Move the smaller variable Add or Subtract away Multiply or Divide away

  5. Get a L.C.D so you can eliminate the denominator

  6. The electric company charges a monthly fee of $20 plus $.064 per kilowatt per hour. Write a linear equation and determine how many kilowatt per hour were used if the monthly bill is $100 Remember: for y=mx+b; m=rate and b= constant

  7. At a party, the caterer supplied a bowl of 1000 chips. Guest 1 eats 22 chips per minute, guest 2 eats 13 chips per minute, and guest 3 eats 26 chips per minute. If the caterer refills the bowl at 47 chips per minute, is the number of chips in the bowl increasing or decreasing? When are there 200 chips left? Decreasing by 14 chips/minute
