  1. Social realism: Shifty (2009) • Shifty is a British urban thriller directed and written by Eran Creevy. • The film was shown in October 2008 at the London Film Festival and then later on general release in the UK in April 2009. • The film was produced by the studios ‘Between the Eyes’ and Film London Microwave’. • Shifty made $244,579 at the Box Office

  2. Narrative/themes • Shifty, set on the outskirts of London follows the friendship between Chris, who has returned to face the troubles he left behind, and Shifty a drug dealer. • Set over a course of 24 hours the two friends try to rekindle their friendship and Shifty makes drug deals with some increasingly dodgy customers. • The central themes of the film are very much centred around friendship and what it means to be a good friend. • The film is also set around drug dealing and the normal life of any drug dealer around London.

  3. Locations and settings • The film is set on the outskirts of London. • Throughout, the characters travel around Shifty’s drug dealing ‘territory’, dropping buy deprived flats, home to Shifty’s customers. • They also drop by a local playground near a block of flats.

  4. Characters • Shifty • Shifty is a local drug dealer, he lives with his brother and makes £3000 a week drug dealing. • Shifty is represented as intelligent with a knowledge of money and a lot of street sense. • It is mentioned during the film by Chris that he was always top of the class and how disappointing it is that he’s ended up drug dealing. • Chris • Shifty’s friend who has returned to the neighbourhood • Both Shifty and Chris are represented as the protagonists of the film despite Shifty’s drug dealing behaviour. • Chris just wants Shifty to leave London and get out of the drug dealing business before he gets in too deep. • Chris is not an entirely positive character, he was a bad friend for leaving Shifty and there may be a darker reason for why Chris left so suddenly. • Rez • Rez is Shifty’s brother who took Shifty in after his parents kicked him out. • Rez wants the best for Shifty but looks down on his drug dealing lifestyle. • He is desperate for Shifty to makeup with his parents and start a fresh life. • When Chris comes back, Rez believes he is a negative influence on Shifty a feels he is a bad friend. • Glen • Glen supplies Shifty with the drugs he sells. • He is the main antagonist and is represented as a particularly dodgy drug dealer that wants Shifty to stay in business with him.

  5. Camera work/editing • The camera work in the film is particularly typical of the Social realism genre. • Most of it is hand held so the viewer really gets a feel of what it’s like to be travelling around this area with these characters. • There are quite a few wide shots which give you the perspective of what the area is like that these characters are living in, for example establishing shots of the council estate.
