South West • Objectives: • To represent, advocate and champion tourism in the South West and be a voice for its tourism industry. • To guide sustainable and balanced development of the visitor economy. • To collect data and provide intelligence to enable the competitive performance of the industry. • Key areas maintained: • Data, sustainability, Welcome, Excellence awards, voice for industry

  5. SSW – Sustainable Tourism Project • Focus – practical application • Themes: • Business operations • Visitor communications • Transport • Natural/ cultural assets • Approach • Partnership • Enabling/ Influencing change • Demonstration

  6. South West • Websites: • Trade website (swtourism.org.uk) to be retained, redeveloped and rebranded • Visitor website (visitsouthwest.co.uk) to be retained to direct traffic to local (DMO) level

  7. Elsewhere • Tourism South East • Remains but loss of core funding • Restructuring/ new MD being recruited • West Midlands • Destination Worcestershire: • To be managed by Chamber • Funding from AWM ends, membership • Warwickshire?

Policy Developments- Principles for Success • Transition from Towards 2015 • Emphasis on quality & sustainability continues • Growth to match national goals but also target to match national carbon goals: • A shift to longer stays, reduced seasonality, drawn for closer markets • Reduced energy consumption • Modal shift away from car use • Community acceptance & local environment still recognised

Policy Developments- Framework for Tourism • Wise Growth - Progress to date: • Action Plan Groups meeting • TMI/ Partners for England • England’s strategy NOT VE’s strategy • All groups asked to incorporate ‘wise growth’ approach • Key questions: • Is that happening? • Will stakeholders benefit from it? • Economics of happiness? • Will be further stakeholder meeting to come
