  1. Hylink: the Hydrogen Link 2007 Energy Postgraduate Conference 17 – 18 July 2007: Massey University Turitea Campus, Palmerston North Steve Broome Industrial Research Ltd 18 July 2007

  2. Industrial Research Ltd IRL employs 220 scientific staff. • Former DSIR • Involved with a variety of scientific and technology developments Hydrogen and Distributed Energy Team • R&D at IRL’s Christchurch and Wellington sites. • Focus on distributed electricity production. • Microgrids, small-scale generation, grid-injecting electricity. • Focus on the production, storage and use of hydrogen. • Production: Electrolysers, reformation, gasification. • Storage: carbon nanotubes, sodium borohydrides, gas pipelines. • Use: fuel cells, hydrogen burners.

  16. Hylink at Totara Valley Process efficiencies and costs Low efficiency but system it is not optimised. Target effiency is about 43%.

  17. Hylink at Totara Valley The Future: • Optimise system to maximise efficiency. • Integrate IRL-designed alkaline electrolyser and fuel cell technologies. • Install new Hylink system elsewhere • Larger scale elecrolyser and fuel cell. • Larger pipeline to increase fuel storage volume. • Potential for safe over-ground hydrogen transport. • Try and make it closer to home! • Funding-dependant.
