Understanding the Funding of the British Monarchy: An Overview of Financial Sources

The British monarchy is funded through various sources, such as the Civil List and grants-in-aid. Since 1660, nearly 70% of these funds support the Queen's staff and official engagements, distinct from the Prime Minister's role. An allocation from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport pays for the maintenance of 267 properties. The Queen must periodically budget for upkeep and remodeling. Additionally, funding covers royal travel and personal wealth, including the Duchy of Lancaster and Cornwall, leading to an overall estimated income of nearly £100 million annually for the monarchy.
