The Divided Monarchy: Northern Kingdom / The Kingdom of Israel Southern Kingdom / The Kingdom of Judah • Comprised of 10 tribes • The majority of the people disliked the leadership of Solomon and Rehoboam • Comprised on two tribes • Considered themselves the “legitimate kings” because of their connection with the Davidic Line During the Divided Monarchy there was both political and religious division between the tribes and external military threats

  9. The Assyrians and The Southern Kingdom • Through King Hezekiah, aligned the southern kingdom with the Assyrians • Eventually the alliance ended and the Assyrians (Saragon 11) launched an unsuccessful siege on Jerusalem

The Fall of the Southern Kingdom • The Babylonians conquered Jerusalem in 597 BC and set up a puppet government under King Zedekiah • King Zedekiah was initially loyal to the Babylonians but then sided with the Egyptian and tries to revolt • King Nebuchadnezzar orders the temple to be destroyed

  11. The Babylonian Exile Throughout the 3 waves of deportation, 4,600 men were exiled to Babylon Why did this happen? The election of a human King? Unfaithfulness to Yahweh? King’s Idolatry? Lack of concern for others?
