What is History? • Not only a study of the _PAST________ • It is a living subject because our interpretation of the past events keeps changing due to new ____KNOWLEDGE____________ we acquire • Knowing as much as we can about the past __HELP/INFLUENCES______ our life at present • We live with history everyday. It is in our mMONUMENTS____, sSONGS_____________, g__GRAVEYARDS____, sSHORELINES__, stories, gardens, photo albums, m_MUSEUMS____, etc…. • History lives in our i_INDIVIDUAL____________ and c__COLLECTIVE_ past.

  3. Individual Past (p. 13) • Individual Past - the events that have shaped your life. They are part of your memories. • Physical objects ( souvenirs, keepsakes, photo albums, notes…) • Heirlooms - special o_OBJECTS__ that have been passed down in your family through many g__GENERATIONS________ • Family trees – show your past and give you a record of b_BIRTHS___, m__MARRIAGES_, and d_DEATHS_____ • __AUTOBIOGRAPHY-story of a person’s life written by that person • _BIOGRAPHY___ - story of a person’s life written by someone else • These are all part of an individual’s past. From these sources of information we can learn much about a person.

Collective Past • history of a p__PEOPLE___ • For example: stories told about the life of a group of people in Torbay (fishermen, town council, etc…) • Examples of “PEOPLE”-Asians, Europeans, Chinese, Newfoundlanders, Beothuk, Inuit, etc • Museums, newspapers, books are great sources of information for collective memories.

  5. Who are historians? (p. 15) • Professionals who i____INVESTIGATE_____ and i__INTERPRET____ the past • They use the HISTORICAL__ method of r__RESEARCH____

  6. 4 steps in the Historical Method of Research • Ask a good question ( who, what, where, when, why, how ) • Who was Brian Peckford? What did he do? Where was he born? When did he become known? Why was he important to our past? 2. Collect reliable information • Decide what sources are available. What would have the kind of information needed? How reliable are the sources? • ( internet, library, newspaper, encyclopedia, interviews, momuments )  3. Organize and evaluate information 4. Interpret information and present conclusions

Cont. • You collect information from both p____________ and s_____________ sources. • __________________ Source – first hand account from photographs, diaries, letters, artifacts…) • __________________ Source – interpretation of something based on information gathered first hand ( from books, magazines, etc..)
