  2. Definition • Schools should be the primary place to work on the reconstruction of society • Schools should work to change the existing social order

Philosophy • Post-World War II Era: • 1. “we live in a period of great crisis, most evident in the fact that humans now have the capability of destroying civilization overnight” • 2. “humankind also has the intellectual, technological, and moral potential to create a world civilization of ‘abundance, health, and humane capacity’” (Becoming a Teacher, page 86)

People • Theodore Brameld • Founder of social reconstructionism • Harold Rugg • One of the best-known educators during the era of Progressive education in the United States • John Holt • Wrote 10 books that greatly influenced the unschooling movements • Ivan Illich • WoteDeschooling Society • John Dewey • Believed that students thrive in an environment where they are allowed to experience and interact with the curriculum • George Counts • Wrote Dare the School Build a New Social Order?

  6. Beliefs about Teaching and Learning • Schools should find ways to solve global problems • Teachers should give their students ideas on how to make the world a better place to live in

  7. Beliefs about Students • Students should learn how to make society a better place • Students should work with each other and try to come up with a way to help society have more order

  8. Beliefs about Knowledge • Helping society is most important thing you can learn in a classroom • Having an effect on the world is important to learn in the classroom
