  3. INTRODUCTION • Sixth biggest country in Europe • 5th and 23rd most populated country in Europe and World respectively • Area is 301,338 square km • Population of over 61 million • Capital city is Rome

  4. GEOGRAPHY • To the north, Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. • To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula and the two biggest Mediterranean Islands of Sicily and Sardinia. • The Po is Italy’s longest river. Italian Map

  5. HISTORY • The capital Rome was founded in 753BC. • Became one nation in 1861. • The Independence Day in Italy is celebrated on 17th March since its independence in 1861. • Republic Day falls on 2nd June since the Italians voted to abolish the monarchy in 1946.

  6. RENAISSANCE • Italy was the birthplace of the Renaissance. • Period of great cultural achievements in poetry, painting and architecture. • Famous artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and Leonardo Da Vinci were part of the Renaissance. • Italy has played a large role in the history of architecture, discovering important building techniques such as the arch and the dome.

  7. ARCHITECTURE • Buildings such as the Colosseums, Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel are famous landmarks across Italy. • The famous Trevi Fountain, Pantheon & the Leaning Tower of Pisa are examples of such architecture. Trevi Fountain

  9. The flag of Italy was officially adopted on 21st January 1919. The national flag of Italy is a tricolor flag that features three equally sized vertical stripes of green, white, red. The colours represent these virtues: hope (green), faith (white), and charity (red). ITALIANFLAG

FOOD & CULTURE • Every small village has its own very typical dishes. • Favourite foods are pasta and pizza. • Italian main dishes are pork, beef, seafood and potatoes, rice and pasta products. • Family is very important for Italians. • Big families: grandparents, parents and children live together.

INVENTIONS • Italian explorers Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci discovered the Americas while Marco Polo explored the East. • Submarine, printing press, eyeglasses, gunpowder, artillery, matchstick, mariner’s compass, compound microscope, wallpaper and flush toilets were all made from Italy. • Galileo Galilei constructed the telescope and supported the Copernican theory, which supports a sun-centered solar system.

  12. GENERAL • Italy is cool in the North, hot and dry in the South. • Agriculture products in Italy: fruits, vegetables, grain, olives, meat and dairy products. • Industries are tourism, machinery, chemicals, food processing, textiles, motor vehicles, clothing, footwear and ceramics.

MODERN ITALY • Italy is among the world’s leaders of the fashion industry. • In the 1950’s, Italian designers: Nino Cerruti and Valentino led the world in creating stylish fashions. • Famous Italian car manufacturers: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo and Maserati. • Armani, Versace, Gucci and Prada are recognized internationally.

  15. 1.ROME • Rome is a vast and complex city that is both historic and modern at the same time. • Best known for housing ancient Roman structures and the Vatican City, Rome has endured for more than 2,500 years as an important center for culture, power and religion. • Today, Rome is one of the most important tourist destinations of the world.

  16. 2.VENICE • Located in northeastern Italy, Venice is connected by hundreds of beautiful bridges and scenic canals. • Of the canals, the Grand Canal is most famous and divides the city into two sections. • Picturesque waterways and historic architecture make Venice one of the most romantic cities in the world. • It is known as “City of Water.” • The boats in Venice are called “gondolas.”

  17. 3.FLORENCE • The capital of Tuscany, Florence is often described as a colossal outdoor museum because of its mass of art and architectural treasures. • Florence’s masterpieces are found all over the city, contained within the large numbers of museums, stunning churches, like the domed Santa Maria del Fiore, and internationally esteemed art galleries like the Ufizzi and Pitti Palace.

  18. 4.MILAN • Nearly destroyed from heavy bombing during World War II, Milan has since reconstructed and now shines as one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. • Widely regarded as a mega fashion in designer shops, Milan also attracts many to its surviving world famous treasures like Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, The Last Supper, the La Scala Opera House and oneof the world’s largest The Gothic Cathedral.

  19. 5.NAPLES • One of the busiest metropolitan cities in the country, Naples is the capital of the Campania region in Southern Italy. • The city of Naples offers a treasure trove of art works and historic sites as well as a vibrant atmosphere of shops, restaurants and nightlife venues. • Many favorite Italian foods originated from here such as pizza, spaghetti and Parmesan. • These dishes are taken seriously in Naples and usually feature fresh, locally grown ingredients.
